There’s a noticeable shift that happens on our lakes once Labor Day weekend passes. I guess you could say the energy changes. Weekends are still busy, but the mid-week days start to stretch out and quiet down in a way that feels completely different from July and August. It’s one of the stretches I look forward to each year.
The Quiet That Settles In
The water is still comfortable and the days stay warm, but the evenings cool off just enough that the fire pit feels perfect. The light softens. Mornings often come with a little mist hanging over Lower Holly Lake and Little Sand Lake. Boat traffic drops off enough that it starts to feel like the lakes belong to whoever is lucky enough to be out there.
New Fishing Boats on the Lakes
This year we’re especially looking forward to the new fishing boats with trolling motors at Little Sand Lodge and Cattail Cabin. Being able to quietly motor around these lakes in September is something special. On a mid-week day it can feel like you have the entire lake to yourself—just the soft hum of the trolling motor, the occasional loon, and the shoreline sliding by.
There’s something about that combination of cooler air, quiet water, and the ability to drift or troll without another boat in sight that feels like pure Northwoods.
Moments We’re Looking Forward To
- Morning coffee on the dock while the mist is still lifting
- Evenings around the fire pit with the first real chill in the air
- Sauna time at Cattail Chalet followed by stepping out into the cool night
- Watching dogs explore the yards and trails with far fewer people around
- The early hints of color starting to show in the trees around both lakes
A Slower Pace Worth Experiencing
These weeks don’t have the big holiday energy of Memorial Day or the Fourth, and they don’t yet have the full peak-fall crowds. They’re just quieter, more spacious, and soothing. The kind of days where you can take your time.
Weekends in September get scooped up right away, but we still have mid-week dates that are wide open across the cabins. If you’ve been thinking about a slower stay—the kind where you can take the boat out and feel like the lake is yours for a few hours—this is a really nice window.
